_CO-LOCAL
London, UK
Integrated Urban Collective | 45,000 sq m Commissioned Study - Ongoing 2020
In collaboration with Tim Jennings
London's fading diversity and identity needs to be rescued through the inevitable return to a system that integrates locally-based workplace, production and housing once again.
Our city has become a workplace-only destination, progressively abandoned by its dwellers - now commuters – and dependant on the consumption of mass-produced, globally sourced goods and services.
The CO-LOCAL is an integrated development model which primarily absorbs its context's historical, cultural and economic DNA to deliver a locally-rooted, community- driven, sustainable and highly connected workplace environment. This high level of site-specificity differentiates our proposal from other co-working/living models which operate by replicating external/foreign trends and imposing them practically anywhere.
The CO-LOCAL operates at the intersection of three primary functions Working, Making and Living. The intrinsic correlation between these three functions is the source of collective endeavour and well-being that young talents and emerging industries are looking for.
Workers, Residents and neighbours of the CO-LOCAL have flexible habits, time-tables and affiliations. They work in highly stimulating, diverse environments, share knowledge and resources and seek open-source, collaborative partnerships with other like-minded individuals and businesses. They commute and have changing, flexible dwelling requirements – or live locally, and use shared amenities and utilities. They actively support and participate in the local production, craft and manufacture of ethically sourced goods. They consume from local retailers and F&B outlets, also engage in communal, cultural activities.
The CO-LOCAL model demands highly connected urban locations in terms of transportation, energy and data-transfer infrastructure, as well as urban areas with strong and distinctive historical, cultural and economic identity. This is key to our model – architecture and planning must be locally inspired, authentic and specific in order to engage with the local context and enhance it. The preservation of historical constructions and traditions are essential to determine each CO-LOCALs roots and identity –in this sense no CO-LOCAL is alike.
The CO-LOCAL drives innovation by complying and surpassing the 3-key industry benchmark systems which are WELL, BREEAM and WIRED certifications.
